[attr="class","colsf"]Born out of her mother’s over-protectiveness, is the young woman’s incredibly stubborn and sarcastic persona, which also resulted in her being a very caring and compassionate persona. For her friends and family, Clary is willing to go to extreme lengths, and sometimes this is seen as recklessly, putting herself in danger, thus, usually leaving the people who care for her extremely worried and exasperated. Clary’s persona is also partnered with being extremely clever and quick-thinking, which often saves herself and others in dire situations. Not only is she stubborn, but she is also headstrong and has a very fiery personality that matches her hair color. She loves and cares deeply about her mother and her friends, which matches her being extremely loyal to them above all others.[break][break]
Like her mother, she is also intelligent and creative, which shows itself in her pictures that she draws, which reveals her emotions and feelings in her work instead of using words to portray them.[break][break]
Having been raised in the mundane world instead of the typical shadowhunter prejudice and rules, she is often found at odds with the more tradition Shadowhunters in the Institute, over issues regarding mundanes and Downworlders, strict adherence to rules and protocol, and their generally self-centered culture. Unlike most Shadowhunters, who defend innocents out of a sense of duty, Clary does so without hesitation because she wants to and feels deeply for protecting the innocent lives of mundanes and Downworlders alike.

[attr="class","colsf"]Clary has always believed her life to be mundane, but once she discovered her true identity she’s slowly been learning about her new life. Due to being a Nephilim, Clary naturally possessed a variety of enhanced physical and mental abilities granted to her, and others like her, by the angel blood of Raziel in her veins and the angelic marks in the Gray Book. This includes, and is not limited to, enhanced strength, speed, agility, stamina, and coordination (which improve over time and practice). Clary is also able to easily see through most magical illusions and glamour over reality, though due to her ignorance to the Shadow World and years’ worth of missing memories, she still has trouble seeing through glamours without some prompting, she’s working on it. The world of weapons, including heavenly weapons, have opened up to her – thus she can use seraph blades that would not normally work for other species.[break][break]
Like all Nephilim, Clary also can use runic magic and apply marks to her skin without any real danger, which in turn, gives off a varied effect that serves to benefit the wearer. However, due to having more angelic blood, particularly, because of her pure angel blood that runs through her blood, she has angelic empowerment. Not only does she have a blood connection with the angel, Ithuriel, she also has access to new runes, and can “create” new runes that are not within the Gray Book, usually sent to her as visions or images by the angel that she is bonded with. Unlike other Shadowhunters, Clary and her mother have the shared ability to press physical objects into paper, transforming them into drawings or paintings, and are conversely the only ones able to “reach into” the pictures to extract the hidden object. While other shadowhunters probably have this ability, Clary’s ability to do this was passed down to her from her mother, who was one of the lucky Nephilim with this unusual angelic ability.[break][break]
Clary, because of the shared angel blood with Ithuriel, shares a connection with Jace as well. In addition to her blood connection to Ithuriel and Jace, she also shares a blood relation to her biological brother, Jonathan Morgenstern, and in turn, gives her the ability to track Jonathan by using the combined strength of their runes and blood.[break][break]
Clary, much like her mother, is also a skilled and talented artist, and could even be said to be better than her mother due to her extent knowledge and abilities. Over the time of her finding out she is a shadowhunter and being trained in the Institute by Jace and Izzy, respectively, resulted in her being a skilled fighter. It might be because her mother was one as well, by she is quite skilled in swordsmanship and hand to hand combat, and has been improving this further under the tutelage of those at the Institute.[break][break]
Clary, also holds many things in her possession, including the Fairchild family heirloom, their stele, which was gifted to her by her mother on her eighteenth birthday. She also has the basic shadowhunter gear, including seraph blades, a witchlight, and other various weapons and steeles besides the one her mother gave her. After her Rune Ceremony, Clary was able to pick her weapon of choice and went with her gut, picking two separate kindjals that she wields as dual blades. She later learned from Luke, her father-figure, that one belonged to her true father (Valentine) and the other belonging to her mother (Jocelyn).

[attr="class","colsg"]history
[attr="class","colsf"]Clarissa Adele Morgenstern was born the youngest child of Valentine and Jocelyn Morgenstern on August 23, 1998, not long after her older brother, Jonathan Christopher, was born. Along with her best friend, and her husband parabatai to thwart Clary’s father’s plans during the Uprising. It wasn’t long before their plan came to fruition, that Jocelyn learned that she was pregnant once more, and realized that she needed to leave her husband. Though at the time, unknown to a depressed Jocelyn, Valentine had been giving her angel blood that had made its way into their unborn child – resulting in another Morgenstern child being an “experiment.” When the Uprising came, Jocelyn was able to steal the Mortal Cup from Valentine but was unable to save her first-born child with whom Valentine had made it look like the child died in the Fairchild mansion fire.[break][break]
Not believing Valentine to be dead, and in fear for her unborn child and losing another one to the world, she fled to Paris, and later New York City, where she gave birth to Clary.[break][break]
For the first two years of her life, Jocelyn had hoped that Clary would have a blind Inner Eye (which would mean she’d have to be trained to see the Shadow World like some Shadowhunters have to be), but she was wrong. At the age of two, Jocelyn had found Clary playing with a faerie in the park and was almost attacked by a demon before being saved by her mother. This near experience with the Shadow World resulted in Jocelyn rushing her daughter to the High Warlock of Brooklyn, a warlock by the name of Magnus Bane.[break][break]
Jocelyn had asked Magnus to remove Clary’s Inner Eye, but this would have put her at risk, so they compromised with a spell that placed a block on her mind that would make her forget what she saw of the Shadow World, even if she came in contact with it and saw it. But the spell was complicated and needed to be recast every two years, something that Jocelyn would continue until she was eighteen years old. Jocelyn was also convinced into letting Clary undergo the ritual performed on Shadowhunter children to protect them from demonic forces or influence. While they were unable to contact an Iron Sister, they were able to use Tessa Gray and the Silent Brother, Brother Zachariah, to perform the ritual. It was because of Tessa’s help, that formed the last name that the two girls would present themselves as, as Clary and Jocelyn “Fray” – a portmanteau of Fairchild and Gray, a form of gratitude to Tessa and to honor the relationship with her ancestors. [break][break]
By the time, Clary was five-years-old, they were found by Luke Garroway, whom would later be seen as Clary’s father figure to her, instead of the person she believed to be her biological father – a deceased soldier name Jonathan Clark. Their life was great, and when she reached the first grade, she met the person that would be her best friend and would be practically inseparable from, Simon Lewis. [break][break]
For the next could of years, her life was pretty mundane; her artistic abilities appeared as she grew up. And on her eighteenth birthday, Clary attended an interview at the Brooklyn Academy of Art, where she was accepted into the advanced program she’d applied for. Her life was pretty great, her birthday was going amazing, and she even dragged Simon and Maureen into the Pandemonium Club, where she encountered a group of Shadowhunter killing what she believed to be humans and also had a run in with Magnus Bane, someone whom she briefly and confusedly remembered. The battle spooked Clary she witnessed at the club, leaving behind her two friends, as she disappeared into the night and returned home. It was here she learned a bit about the Shadowhunter world before people broke in, Jocelyn clasped a necklace around Clary’s neck, and Dot sent her through a portal where she found herself at the NYPD 89th Precinct, where Luke was working. However, she never met up with Luke due to overhearing Luke telling some unknown people that he felt nothing for her mother. She disappeared once more into the night, returning home to look for her mother but was attacked by a demon in the guise of Dot who attacked her, managing to injury Clary and leave her infected with demon blood severely. However, one of the people from the club, a guy she would learn is named Jace, arrived just in time to save her. He saved her as she collapsed, and later she found herself waking up in what she learned was called the “New York Institute” a place located within an abandoned looking church. [break][break]
It was here that she met Isabella and Alec Lightwood, the latter who expressed his distrust of her and was informed the basics about her unknown life. She learned that they, including her, were Shadowhunters, humans who were part-angel, whose mission was to protect the human race from demons, and that other beings from stories exist. In addition to finding out that she was Nephilim, the Institute's trainer and former Circle member Hodge Starkweather told her that her mother was once also part of the Circle—the organization, led by Valentine Morgenstern, that abducted her. [break][break]
While everyone was after finding Jocelyn because she was taken by people that wanted to use the Mortal Cup, something she stole from the Circle and Valentine years ago, they decided to work alongside her. Finding Jocelyn and the cup was their mission and their top concern; it was Clary that only wanted to save her mother and be reunited with her. [break][break]
Clary later learned that her memories were blocked when the Shadowhunters brought her to the City of Bones, where the Silent Brothers attempted to tap into her mind using the Soul- Sword. While not all the memories she had were accessed, she did remember enough to figure out that her real father was Valentine. Before Jace and Clary left the City of Bones, her best friend was kidnapped by vampires and taken to Hotel Dumort under the orders of Camille, but they were able to escape with the help of a vampire named Raphael. Realizing that her memories were crucial to their search for the Cup, as indicated by the demon that had attacked her at their home, Clary told them of a memory, which came to her at the Silent City, from her youth where she saw a man named Magnus taking her memories, Simon told them that her abductor Camille had told her about Magnus Bane when he mentioned Clary's missing memories. [break][break]
Able to lure Magnus out of hiding with a party, the warlock initially refused to help them but was swayed by them fighting off Circle members and saving his fellow warlocks. Clary also learned, much to her surprise, that her father had tortured and killed the one person she saw as her sister, Dot. However, her memories were far from close, as they had been fed to the memory demon, Valak, for safekeeping. Needing the memories desperately, the group summoned the demon, but when Jace’s life was put at risk, Clary sacrificed her memories and banished the demon. [break][break]
However, against all the odds and with no memories at all, Clary was able to retrieve the Cup for the Clave. They almost lost the cup though when Valentine, posing as Michael Wayland, tried to deceive them into giving him the cup, but Clary’s quick thinking resulted in them giving the man a fake Cup, which was after being falsely told that she and Jace – someone she had started to like – were actually siblings. The group was able to rescue her mother from Valentine, and although she was still asleep under the effect of the potion she took, they began looking for the Book of the White to wake her. Though, with things looking up, they were betrayed by someone they never saw coming. Hodge, someone that was once a Circle member and later was sentenced to the New York Institute, stole the Mortal Cup and handed it over to Valentine. It wasn’t long after that the Book of the White was located and they were able to revive Jocelyn, but in the process, they lost Jace who felt he had no choice but to join Valentine. Leaving behind through a Portal, Clary attempted to stop him but was held back by Alec, someone she had grown close to over the time of being around the trio. [break][break]
After Jace’s disappearance through the portal, Clary learned that her mother had been successful awoken and was able to have a brief but happy reunion before Clary became preoccupied with their troubles. She was even able to break the news of Jonathan, her brother, being alive and kidnapped by Valentine, though she didn’t know her mother’s true feelings towards her brother. Along with this hidden truth about her mother’s feelings towards Jace, whom she believed to be her brother, she was also able to find out that Victor Aldertree (the Institute’s new head) had her closely monitored. [break][break]
Clary later found herself being blamed by Alec for their current dilemmas, making her start to falter in her sense of belong. Unable to feel like she truly belonged in the life she was supposed to be born into, she also found herself unable to return to her former ordinary life. So much had changed since her eighteenth birthday, that going back seemed uncommon to her. Running away from the Institute, she returned to the college she was supposed to attend to gain her bearing, she found herself there to paint. While there, she was kidnapped by Dot and taken to Valentine’s ship where she was caged and mind-controlled by Dot to trick Jace into submitting to their father. Clary, however, was able to get through to Dot, who then later helped the two of them escape by taking down the wards with her magic. [break][break]
Though separated, Jace was able to contact Clary and Isabelle, and the group formed a plan to meet at Magnus’s loft to save the unconscious Alec, who needed contact with his parabatai to survive. While all of this was going down, the Clave decided to reassign Jocelyn to Idris, which is how Clary came to consider returning there with her mother, however briefly, she turned her offer down because she wanted to learn to be a Shadowhunter at the Institute and found herself unable to leave her friends behind. [break][break]
However, even if Clary had decided to return to Idris with her mother, that would never come to pass. A new type of demon infiltrated their ranks at the Institute and began possessing Shadowhunters to kill others. And while the demon-possessed Alec, it murdered Jocelyn, and took her mother away from her. A vengeful and devastated Clary set out to hunt the demon and soon found it possessing Izzy, causing Clary to stab the girl after it attacked Alec, forcing the demon from Izzy's body. Clary mourned her mother, after vanquishing the demon, and during her clouded judgment went in search of Iris Rouse, a warlock, in hopes of bringing her mother back from the dead. [break][break]
With Alec by her side, they found her home and were separated from each other, resulting in Clary committing a blood oath, and realized too late that resurrection through dark magic comes with a dark price, particularly for her mother’s sanity. However, that wasn’t the only dark price that came out of it, as Iris set out to have Clary impregnated by a demon and bear a child of demon and Shadowhunter blood. But Clary, having received a vision of a rune that she later learned was not in the Gray Book, discovered a new ability and ultimately created a rune to help vanquished the demon set out to impregnate her. [break][break]
Sometime after, Clary began hearing screams and through Sister Cleophas – a former Iron Sister and Luke’s sister – she learned that it was the sounds of an angel crying out for help due to being trapped by Valentine. Clary and Jace were able to release him, learning that he was the angel Ithuriel, and in return, he gave them a vision of the Soul-Sword’s destruction before he left and returned to Heaven. She later learned from Magnus that she likely had a blood connection with Ithuriel and that the very same angel sent her "new" runes. [break][break]
It wasn’t long after that, Clary and Simon met up and discovered that they have been harboring feelings for one another, though Simon was the first to confess his feelings for the red-head Shadowhunter. Thus, the long-time best friends began dating, and while Clary was finally happy to be dating her vampire best friend, there were still feelings for Jace that swirled within her, but them being siblings resulted in her staying away. [break][break]
It wasn’t long after their proclamation of “love” that Clary began to get weaker and weaker, learning that her blood oath with Iris bound her to the deal. Cursed with her impending death unless she managed to rescue Iris goddaughter, Madzie, from Valentine, she had limited time to save the young warlock. Jace together with Luke and Simon they raced against time to save Madzie before Clary died, and while she came close, she was able to recover. However, Madzie was already too far gone in Valentine’s game and kidnapped Simon for Valentine’s plan to lure Clary to the Institute, where he planned for her to active the planted Soul-Sword. Against the others’ wishes, Clary was desperate to save her best friend and found herself going anyway. Instead, Jace went in her place due to his belief that his “demon blood” would destroy the sword, but he learned the truth that night. He wasn’t laced with demon blood, but was like Clary – he had angel blood and was able to activate the sword as well. Thus, Valentine was able to destroy all the Downworlders. However, Clary was able to deactivate the sword with a rune she had a vision of, but before they could collect it…it was gone. [break][break]
Luckily, Valentine was captured and interrogated, they were unable to find the location of the Sword or the Cup, but Clary learned that she and Jace were not siblings, something that he kept from her because she was happy with Simon. Discovering that the only family – aside from Valentine – that she thought she had was in fact not taken a heavy toll on her. The chain of sudden, devastating events and revelations drove her to block her emotions to give the semblance of levelheadedness, and this made her momentarily lose her ability to use her new runes. However, with the help of newcomer Sebastian, Clary embraced her pain and anger and regained access to the runes. [break][break]
Clary believed that discovering that she and Jace weren’t siblings would not change her relationship with Simon, and wanting to prove that this was true, they continued dating and revealed to be truly happy together. However, during a visit to the Seelie Queen, she was forced to have “the kiss she most desired” in exchanged for their lives. She attempted kissing Simon, but the kiss had no effect, but when her lips met that of Jace – they were freed. Simon was so devastated that he broke up with her, not that she could blame him. However, this encounter resulted in interactions with Jace being quite awkward. Though working together became unavoidable when Valentine escaped the Clave’s grasp, which resulted in Jace being convinced her father was in Idris, and thus, a vision of a portal rune appeared in her mind. The portal took them to Idris, the beautiful home of many Shadowhunters, and where Clary almost drowned in Lake Lyn and became quite delusional from its waters. Though they did not get there in time to stop Valentine, they found a notebook, which revealed that her brother was alive and had been raised by Valentine all this time – which they later learned was Sebastian. [break][break]
Haunted by the recurring dreams of the lake, she quickly realized that it was the third and final Mortal Instrument – the Mortal Mirror. This fact was attempted to be kept away from Valentine, but he learned the truth and attempted to summon the Angel Raziel and compel a wish out of him. Along with Jace, Clary tried to stop him, but they were too late. The angel was already summoned; however, they were able to catch her father off guard, but it resulted in Jace’s death. Valentine attempted to get his wish granted, but before his blood was given in offering, Clary attacked and killed her father – destroying the last parent she had. Clary, in her thoughts and in her devastation that the person she loved was dead, she used the wish to bring Jace back from the dead. With the request granted, things seemed fine as he breathed back to life, but the consequences that would later reveal itself yet remained unseen. [break][break]
Not long after the angel disappeared, Jace was brought back, and Valentine was found dead – Clary was honored for her bravery to stand up to her father. In a public ceremony attended by many Shadowhunters to honor her, she received her Angelic rune – the rune that symbolizes the end of her training as a Shadowhunter. Wanting Jace to reveal what happened to Alec, he was quick to insist that it should be kept a secret because taking the one wish the Shadowhunters were granted could be grounds for punishment – something Clary would later learn the hard way. [break][break]
Slowly the consequences of Jace’s resurrection began to show itself through his paranoia that Jonathan had returned from the dead, but that was later contradicted. But it didn’t stop Jace from believing that he had lost his mind, telling Clary that he was going to seek treatment at the City of Bones, but Clary doubted it was mental but more because of his revival. She later confided in Luke in bringing Jace back from the dead, and together, the two of them went to see Cleophas at Luke’s farm and asked for her help to reach out to Ithuriel. With her help, they were successful in summoning the angel and asked the question that burned within her – was she responsible for Jace’s current state. She learned that she wasn’t, but his resurrection left him vulnerable to influence and revealed that a great evil and arrived within their realm, which Clary believed was the Owl. Before he could reveal the Owl’s master, a gigantic demon arrived and tore out the angel's heart, taking a sliver of her soul and left, resulting in Clary’s deduction that the demon that arrived was the Owl’s master. [break][break]
Jace changed after returning from his treatment, claiming to be healed by the Silent Brothers, but Clary saw right through it. She turned to Magnus for help, which resulted in him summoning Brother Zachariah for help. It was from the sources he brought them to look through that Clary learned that Zachariah was close to a Herondale in his past life, even asking about Jace’s treatment that she learned never happened. Magnus revealed that Jace’s behavior revealed he had fallen out of love with Clary and connected it to a potion he made for a client, which they later learned that it was the woman that came for the potion was a demon. [break][break]
Jace had wholly changed by that point and set his eyes on Ollie as his next target, but they tried to stop him, but they were too late. With Ollie possessed, they learned that Jace was actually the Owl from before and quickly went to track him down, resulting in a fight between the two lovers. The fight was filled with horrible words that broke Clary, and later a fall of the building that almost claimed her life. Leaving her severely injured and momentarily paralyzed, she called for the one person she could trust in the world – Simon. [break][break]
After she recovered from her long fall, Clary joined the briefing where Magnus revealed the demon as Lilith, the Queen of Edom. Because of this revelation, Clary revealed the wish she used to bring Jace’s life back, and while she feared Alec was going to turn her in, he surprised her with a hug and said that he would have done the same. They plotted to trap Jace in a Malachi Configuration, which they stole from the Armory with Imogen’s help. However, before the plan could come to pass, Imogen was killed at the hands of the Owl. While having their presences found at the Cemetery of the Disgraced, alerting the guards to their activities, Clary surrendered herself to the Clave where she was questioned by Consul Jia Penhallow, where she told them the truth. All of it – and because of this, Clary was sentenced to death. [break][break]
With her execution scheduled, Clary found herself locked away with other inmates on death row, including Iris Rouse. The reason for her execution being moved up? Iris had refused Jia’s request to resurrect Valentine and revealed that a rune could do just that, stalling Clary’s execution. Clary used the necromancy rune to bring him back, but he refused to say anything unless it was to Clary, which delayed the execution further. Through her father’s resurrection, he shared all that he knew – the reason Lilith wanted his body was because she needed his flesh for the ritual to bring her brother back from the dead. Intending to burn Valentine’s body to stop this from happening, Jia returned but was met with resistance from Valentine. Clary played a part, pretending to be on her father’s side, but instead grew closer to her father and canceled out his rune. With her father dead once more, at her hand, she told the guard to burn her father’s body, but he revealed himself as Jace. Instead of doing as she said, he took Valentine rib and kidnapped Clary to return to Lilith. It was here that she learned that Lilith also needed her, another key to bringing her brother back from the dead. [break][break]
Slowly Lilith cut marks into Clary’s skin that she noticed appeared on the corpse of her brother, thus, binding their life forces together. Clary threatened to kill herself, knowing that would stop Lilith and lure her away, where she struck her with the sun ruin. This gave enough time for her friends, including Simon to do all that they could. Lilith tried to kill Simon but was defeated by the Mark of Cain that laid on his flesh, resulting in the force sending Simon back and over the building. They, however, were too late, and as Clary attempted to save her friend her brother stopped her. Lilith’s death caused a massive explosion on the Earth, resulting in her friends believing that she and her brother had died in the blast, but they were wrong. [break][break]
Clary and Jonathan disappeared before their death could come about, together they stay hidden from friends and family. She hopes to get through to her brother, hoping to sway him to the side of good and to show him that he could be whomever he wants to be, not what Lilith and Valentine had made him into. But Clary knows sooner or later she has to reveal herself to her friends and the Clave, but for now – she’ll stay hidden for as long as she needs to – no matter how long it takes.
