[attr="class","colsf"]Alec was, until recently, the very image of repressed. In every sense that a person can be. He was the oldest sibling in a household that believed that their family name had something to prove to their kind. He was never told what it was they had to prove, but it was ingrained in him since before he could remember that to uphold Clave law was the Lightwood way. “The law is hard, but the law is fair.”
[Break][break]
And honestly with a brother as reckless as Jace, a sister as determined to break every rule as Isabelle, and Max only nine--- someone had to be the responsible one. If not for the sake of the Lighwood’s then to make sure Jace and Izzy didn’t get themselves killed. So Alec took that responsibility on himself; he became the embodiment of responsibility. His siblings could do what they wanted, so long as he made sure everything else was in order. Which means when he screws up, the full weight of it rests on his shoulders, crushing him slowly while he holds himself entirely accountable. More often than not he uses that to berate himself internally while externally causing himself pain.
[Break][break]
And then there's the emotionally repressed factors. Shadowhunters aren’t exactly the most openminded of communities. They're traditionalists at heart, and with that comes certain expectations; marriage, children to continue the bloodline, a healthy disdain for any species not nephilim. Alec never really fit in with any of those, for obvious reasons, and quickly learned to repress that part of him too. To a point where he wasn't really sure how to express sincere emotions outside of his brothers and sister. (And more recently his mother). But then he met Magnus and he learned that there's a whole world of emotions and experiences he hadn't let himself hope for, or prepared himself to contend with. It can be overwhelming at times but he wouldn't trade it for anything.
[Break][break]
Though for all his struggles to cope with his own emotions, he's always there for friends and family who need him; always there to reassure or lend a shoulder whether for strength or to cry on. He'd do anything for family if they asked... and even if they didn't. He’s also impatient, and has no qualms letting people know that. It’s one of the many reasons he hates being the distraction in any given fight situation. That and the fact that he can’t exactly keep an eye on everyone if it means splitting up. He'd rather be the first line of defense, the first at risk, in any scenario.
[Break][break]
Despite his underlying need to uphold the family name, there’s a part of Alec that wants to be the way Jace and Isabelle are. That wants to be able to open up, to relax for all of two seconds without having to worry about what his parents think or how it’ll look to the Clave if they break the rules. He's just spent so long following orders and toeing the line, that rebelling isn't instinctive yet. It hasn't stopped him questioning authority or trying his damndest to put his foot down when he thinks the rules are hurting more than helping, but... he makes mistakes. Sometimes exceptionally bad ones.
[Break][break]
But he’s trying.
[Break][break]
And in trying he's found a side of him he didn't know about for the first two decades of his life. He's come into himself as both a leader and a person. He's found purpose in trying to unite all the communities in the shadow world. Made strides towards open communication with his cabinet meetings. And it hasn't all been smooth sailing, but it's important to him.

[attr="class","colsf"]On an intellectual level, Alec’s quite a history buff. Of all of his siblings, he’s the one who was most interested in their studies growing up, and history and languages were his favorite subjects. Alec's also been groomed his whole life for a leadership position. He has the battle-ready skills of a commanding officer and the ability to delegate as the Head of His Institute. He's a quick thinker and a determined peacekeeper.
[Break][break]
While not a traditional skill, it's worth noting that Alec is great at interacting with children.
[Break][break]
Even without his enhancements, Alec's a force to be reckoned with. He’s had extensive training since he was 8 years old and is now proficient in hand to hand combat as well as the short sword, but his true skills lies with the bow and arrow. He designed his arrows himself, carving angelic runes into the shafts to make them even more potent to demons.
[Break][break]
Being that he's a Shadowhunter, Alec is capable of maintaining runes. As a general rule, all Nephilim can, but not all nephilim have the parabatai rune. A parabatai marking connects him and his adopted brother Jace. If something violent happens to either of them, the other will feel it; should one of them die, the effects would be excruciating. The parabatai bond also increases the extent and accuracy of tracking spells; when two use it together it has greater power. It allows for better compatibility in a fight as well.

[attr="class","colsg"]history
[attr="class","colsf"]Alec was born in the last year of one of the darkest times the shadowhunters have ever known. When a rogue named Valentine Morgenstern was at the peak of his power and determined to rid the world of any creature tainted by demonic blood. It’s true, being only one year old, didn’t mean much in the way of remembering, but the environment would shape the entire way he grew up.
[Break][break]
Most notably because two members of the Circle, Maryse and Robert Lightwood, were his parents. When the time came and Valentine was overthrown, the Lightwoods should have been cursed, punished like the rest of Valentine’s followers who hadn’t defected in time, but because of their marriage and because of Alec, the Lightwoods were given leniency. They were kept out of their home realm for the most part; relegated to the NY Institute for his parents’ crimes.
[Break][break]
For a while that was the worst of it; things were relatively quiet. That is... until Jace Wayland. Jace came to them, orphaned and in need of a home, when Alec was 11 years old. His parents took him in, raised him like one of their own. And before he even realized it, Alec had come to see Jace as an integral part of his life. Where Alec was focused, responsible, and reserved, Jace was confident, rebellious and socially gifted. And somehow it worked for them. Or it mostly worked for them, until Alec realized that Jace didn't just charm his parents and teachers; he charmed Alec too. Maybe a little too well.
[Break][break]
Enough so that when Jace suggested that hey become parabatai, Alec was worried. More worried than he'd ever been in his entire life and considering his life, that was saying something. It was forbidden to be in love with your parabatai. According to the Clave it clouded your judgement and enhanced insecurities. (If you could feel how the other person in your relationship was thinking, it wasn't always a great thing apparently). But eventually, that too got repressed and he went through with the ceremony.
[Break][break]
And it might have been stupid or naive (or masochistic of him), but Jace had never really been serious about girl’s and he’d let himself hope that…maybe... but then Clary Fray had to come barreling into their lives and ruin everything. They’d been on a standard mission; trying to find a shapeshifter who was peddling human blood to buyers (in direct violation of the accords). And then the mundane who’d turned out to be one of their own (untrained, annoying and naive to a point of stupidity at times, but one of their own) butted in and went and got herself stung with demon poison.
[Break][break]
Things pretty much went downhill from their. No amount of guilting, reminding, and outright disagreeing with Isabelle and Jace kept them from breaking rule after rule to help Clary find her mother. Nevermind that she was willing to drag his family into danger to save hers. Suddenly they were using Izzy’s ties with the Seelie’s, poking at vampire nests, consorting with …y’know, uh, reasonably attractive warlocks, and all to find this girl’s mom. And stop Valentine from finding the Mortal Cup. Because apparently he wasn’t dead. Unsurprisingly the Clave wasn’t pleased with them.
[Break][break]
Mostly because of the rule breaking-- which he’d been against from the start. And even knowing that, even knowing how long he’d followed every rule or order, his parents still decided to take matters into their own hands--- went behind his back and planned to arrange a marriage for him to save the family name. All because the Clave had decided to send in Lydia Branwell to oversee the affairs at the Institute. So he took some advice from Magnus Bane; he decided to start doing things his own way.
[Break][break]
He proposed to Lydia.
[Break][break]
Not one of his most romantic moves, true, but he and Lydia understood each other. Neither of them was in love with the other, but a marriage would give them both what they wanted. She’d get to stay in New York and be out in the field more often, and he’d… well he’d get to restore some dignity to the Lightwood name on his own terms. He'd get to keep the Institute. He just… hadn’t counted on emotions getting in the way. He’d been repressing himself for so long he just kind of figured it wouldn’t be a problem.
[Break][break]
But then the Clave had wanted to punish one of the Seelies and of course it’d been Meliorn, Izzy’s … whatever they were. And of course she, Jace, and Clary had to stage a coup to save him. And of course Izzy just had to come back to face trial. And of course she had to ask Magnus to represent her in court. It’d both surprised him and hadn’t that Magnus accepted. Alec had assumed he’d be less than eager to assist what with the whole… marrying a woman after-- after whatever it was going on between them. But Magnus was a good man, and he’d helped them (For a price. He was good, but he wasn’t that good.)
[Break][break]
And then one thing had led to another and the wedding was there and he’d almost done it. Lydia’d pressed the tip of her stele to his hand for their marriage rune--- and then Magnus had swept into the room. And then he couldn’t really remember why he’d thought any of it was a good idea in the first place. Before he knew it he’d stomped across the room, passed his mother, grabbed hold of Magnus’s lapels and pulled him in for a kiss; Clave rules be damned. Most of what happened in the immediate aftermath was still a blur for him.
[Break][break]
He knew he'd gotten into an argument with his parents, had found out the Book of White was with Camille Belcourt, and discovered Hodge had betrayed them and seriously injured Lydia all in the same night. From there it'd been a whirlwind of tracking down Hodge with Jace and Luke, losing Jace and Hodge, being called in as backup for Izzy, Magnus, Clary and the Vampire, and letting Circle members get the jump on him and Magnus.
[Break][break]
But the last part of the night, the part where he let himself be used as incentive for Jace to go with Valentine. That part was perfectly clear in his mind. That was the thing that kept him working around the clock to try to get his parabatai-- his brother back.
[Break][break]
He'd always been particularly proud of how focused he could be when he set his mind too it, growing up. But that was back when the only people in his life where his parents and siblings. And that was before Valentine had taken his parabatai. It turned out that they had a different word for it, once you were an adult: tunnel vision. He became obsessed with finding Jace, so much so that he nearly pushed away everyone who cared about him. And when he finally managed to pace himself and take a step back, Jocelyn Fairchild ruined the one chance they'd had at getting Jace back. (By trying to shoot him with a crossbow.
[Break][break]
So when she and Luke offered an alternative, albeit exceptionally dangerous, means of finding his brother, he jumped at the opportunity. Using an adamis stone, he plunged himself deep into their bond, putting himself in a temporary coma. Temporary in that a combination of magic and parabatai power had finally pulled him out of it. But whatever relief came from that was short lived when a demon managed to infiltrate the Intstitute. Jumping from person to person, Alec was just one in a long list of people who'd managed to get possessed that day. But he was the only one to kill another shadowhunter while posessed. Jocelyn.
[Break][break]
Days turned into weeks and still the guilt of it gnawed at him. It still eats away under his skin even if Clary did assure him that she doesn't blame him for what happened. But he's done his best to move forward. After creating the Downworld Council meeting), things started to even out for him. Not so much for Magnus, but they were dealing with that as best they could.
[Break][break]
And then came the soulsword. On some level he knew there was gonna be backlash. He’d found himself in a no win scenario: either he told Magnus about the missing soulsword and betrayed the Clave and potentially started a war between the downworlders and his brethren, or he kept the claves secret and betrayed Magnus. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Magnus not to tell the warlocks or Luke or even Raphael… it just, didn’t seem fair to put him a position where he’d have to lie to everyone else. Not after everything else he’d been through. In hindsight, he probably should’ve realized just how deeply Magnus would feel betrayed by that. There wasn’t an excuse good enough to make for an apology, but he hadn’t… he hadn’t thought Magnus would offer his allegiance to the seelie queen against the shadowhunters. Well not against them, but definitely not with them.
[Break][break]
But in the upcoming week there wasn’t time to dwell on his own failures. Demons were coming in through rifts, a new Shadowhunter had betrayed them for Valentine and finally, finally, they’d managed to close in on Valentine. Jace and Clary had split up, gone back to Idris to track down her father, and he and Izzy stayed behind to close up the rift and keep Brooklyn safe. Admittedly with Magnus’s somewhat reluctant assistance, but at the end of the day, things were all patched up. For once things were going right… or as right as they could on a day like that.
[Break][break]
He should’ve figured it would all come tumbling down. He’d been warned, back before the parabatai trials, about the risks you took on when completing the rune. Heightened emotions, experiencing the pain of your partner, the fallout of death. Some didn’t survive the death of a parabatai, but Alec… Alec wasn’t lucky enough for that. He felt the moment the life snuffed out of Jace, felt it in every firing synapse of his body when their connection snapped and frayed into a thousand strands. He’d felt pain before, but never like that. And then the emptiness.
[Break][break]
It wasn’t until he was staring down a very real and living Jace Wayland, and a very dead Valentine, that he allowed himself to breathe again. But a breath was all he got because things turned into a wirlwind after that. With the offer of a promotion in Alicante hanging over his shoulders, his tentative make up with Magnus and a new looming demon threat on the horizon, he more than had his hands full.
[Break][break]
It turned out Lilith, the mother of demons, was back and she had a right hand demon: the Owl. It took them longer than he was proud of to realize that Jace was the owl in question; possessed when Clary'd wished him back to life. He, Magnus and Izzy did what they could to free Jace, but even their best efforts weren't enough to keep him safe from here. In the end, she took him back and Alec resolved himself to fulfilling Jace's last request: to end his life and Lilith's control over him.
[Break][break]
Of course he hoped Magnus's plan would come through and that they'd be willing to save him, but he prepared himself for the ultimate sacrifice. He just... hadn't counted on himself being the sacrifice. It wasn't until the arrow pierced through his chest that he realized he might be the ultimate sacrifice. He'd wanted to spare Jace that pain, had promised him he would, but in the end he'd let him down. The last thing he can really remember before waking up in the infirmiry is Magnus making his dramatic entrance and saving Jace from Lilith.
[Break][break]
