- FIRE - "If I could light the world up, for just one day." You could say that it all happened so fast, but it always happened so fast. That was just the way it had always been. Plan, prepare, be on guard, and then learn to think and act fast because once it went down, it went down fast. There had been the fight and at the time she did what she did best, watch their backs. Her job, was to keep things busy so that Alec could get to Jace, so that Simon could get to Clary. She had to trust that they would all do their jobs, and they had to trust that she would do hers. Which left little time to worry about it all. Focus, that was all she could do. Focus.
She and Luke had done their part and when the demons flew from the mundanes and went to attack them, she was ready. When she saw Jace coming towards them she braced herself. Just in case it had meant Alec had failed and she would be fighting him as well. If she had given herself even a moment to think, she would have realized that if Alec had failed, it would have meant he was dead. There was no other way he would have given up on Jace. Her mind didn't have that moment to think and hadn't needed it. Jace immediately attacked the demons and she smiled, exchanging a look with Luke. Jace was back. So they sent him after Clary and finished dealing with the possessed mundanes.
They had all finally collapsed and she went out to find Alec, and it had happened, all so fast. She saw Alec laying there and not really moving. She saw Magnus holding him and when his eyes met hers, and she knew that Alec was in trouble. That was when they were rocked by an explosion. Her head whipped around and up and she saw that the top of the building was gone. Her body went tense wanting to be in two places at once, but it was about trust. She had to trust Jace was all right. That he had gotten to Clary and Simon. That they were safe. So instead she went to Alec.
Now she was pacing. Thinking over everything and wondering if something could have been changed. Could they have done something differently? Not that it would bring Clary back. Not that it would heal Alec. But she needed to think. She needed to look over problems and find solutions so in the future, she could do better. Of course, she was also pacing because she couldn't keep an eye on both Alec and Jace, and by the angel, they both needed it. Jace of course blamed himself. He would probably throw himself at the Clave at this point, which was the last thing they needed. Alec, meanwhile, was healing.
On the way back to the Institute she was given the update. Magnus had magic no more, and while Jace had tried helping to heal Alec, it had basically just saved him from dying. And that was barely. So now he was in the infirmary, sedated, so he could heal. He was stubborn and so she paced, knowing once he woke up, he'd be asking about Jace, asking about Clary, and trying to get up. She felt bad enough that Magnus couldn't be here, but there were protocols and he had things to take care of himself. So it was all on her right now, to report, to take care of the lock down, to do clean up, and to keep her brother from making things worse.

Being awake didn't happen all at once for Alec. It crept up on him slowly; the sounds of the infirmary filtering in (or in this case, the lack thereof), the stillness settling into his bones. He was sore all over, though if he had to pinpoint the worst of it, he could narrow it down to his wrist, his throat and his chest. His brow pinched in momentary confusion, his mind slow to supply just what had happened to get him to this point. But in a rush it hit him: the owl, the arrow, Magnus, Jace. Jace!
His eyes flicked open, back rising off the bed only to hunch when the pain caught up with him. With a hiss of breath he eased back against the pillows. Right; their fight. For all that he'd promised to grant Jace's wish to die, he hadn't really taken into account that Jace was the better fighter between them. And with the Owl behind the wheel, so to speak, he hadn't been pulling any punches. The arrow through his chest had been evidence enough of that.
Hazily, he took stock of the bandages on his chest (he spared a moment to realize his shirt was gone) and the wraps on his wrist. The iratze's were helping, but not an instant cure. Though, if he was honest with himself, he hadn't really expected to wake back up after all that. Being a Shadowhunter meant knowing that your life expectancy wasn't guaranteed past your twenties. It meant knowing that every mission you took part in might be your last, but even so... Alec had never stared down death the way he had in that moment. It'd never felt so real. And he was ashamed to admit, even just to himself, that beneath the jokes to Magnus and the assurances he'd made to Jace that... he'd been scared.
But he could deal with that (that and so much more) later. Right now he needed to find the others. He needed to be sure the Clave didn't have Jace, he needed to find Magnus... to figure out what he'd done, he needed to know if his mother was all right and Izzy--
As if his thoughts of her had somehow made him more aware of his surroundings, he noticed the sound of boots pacing back and forth somewhere nearby. His brows furrowed until his gaze settled on his sister, looking tired and frazzled but very much alive and unharmed. He shifted, raising himself up more carefully this time. "Izzy?" he croaked? words: ### || tagged || notes: abcAnnie || caution

- FIRE - "If I could light the world up, for just one day." Here was the problem for when Alec woke up and started asking questions. Izzy didn't have answers. Jace had seemed in shock, then angry, and well, Jace sometimes did stupid things when angry. It was funny if you thought about it. Before Clary, she wouldn't have worried. He had been focused on his job at all times. Oh cocky, but that was just Jace. He didn't let his emotions get involved. With Clary, he often seemed to run on emotions and perhaps this change was something Jace himself was not used to. Which put him in precarious situations. Right now, precarious was the last thing any of them needed.
With Magnus she knew even less. He had been obviously preoccupied with Alec's condition and not really interested in explaining what happened. Other than him having the power to save Jace and now having no power at all. She felt horrible having to make Magnus leave, even though he didn't fight it. He had seemed, resigned. Which didn't make her feel any better, though she promised she would take care of him and would let Magnus know as soon as she had any news. The problem was, now there was Jace and Magnus, both on the loose. Both unknowns to her right now. She didn't like not knowing. It meant not being prepared.
There was no news from Alicante yet. The operative word was yet. There was going to be news, she didn't know if it would be better for Alec to be up and about to take care of it, or for him to still be healing and for her to deal with it. As much as she'd love for him to be dealing with it, he was more capable obviously, she didn't want them taking it all out on him either. It seemed to her more and more that the Clave wasn't always aware of how things were here in the Mundane world. This fight, this constant fighting, they didn't really know.
She heard the movement and turned to watch just as Alec settled back down into his pillow. With a frown she headed over again. Figured he would try to immediately get up again. Her face set in a hard line and ready to reprimand him for thinking about getting up it all softened as he called her name. Damn but it was hard to stay mad at him. Even when he deserved it.
She reached behind him to fix his pillows and then sat down next to him and took his hand. "I'm here. Now stop trying to get up. You aren't ready yet, you're still. . . " Now she had a hitch in her own throat. With a sigh she brushed the hair from his forehead. "Why are you two so damn stubborn?"

There was something strangely alien about letting someone else take care of him. It's not that Izzy had never been affectionate with him before--because she had. And he couldn't begin to count the times he'd let Jace draw an iratze on him since they 'd met. But this... tenderness, this vulnerability while lying in the infirmary? He wasn't used to being on the receiving end of it. As a general rule he either didn't get himself injured badly enough to warrant medical attention or just swept it under the rug as long as possible. But as alien as it felt to be coddled, squeezing Izzy's hand to reassure her that he was here and alive-- that part felt natural.
He barely managed a "Hey..." to assure her that while he might be a great many things: dead wasn't one of them, when she started fussing over him. "How long was I out for?" He could admit, though, that it was nice, in a way, to see so obviously that she cared (even if it was more exasperation than concern), but he had so many questions, so many things that were going to need doing after everything that'd just happened. He didn't have the luxury of time to recuperate, no matter how much his sister might want him to.
Although her comments did serve the purpose of reminding him that it was more than just himself hurting after their fight against Lilith. He tried sitting up again in surprise. "Where's Jace, and Mom--- " he glanced around the room once, taking it all in as thought half expecting someone else to be there. "Magnus is he.... " He wanted to ask more about Luke and Simon and Clary. Had they killed Lilith? words: ### || tagged || notes: abcAnnie || caution

- FIRE - "If I could light the world up, for just one day." Of course he was stubborn, she knew it, he knew it, and well there was no changing that. He was even stubborn when it came to taking care of himself or admitting what he really wanted. Thankfully he wasn't permanently stubborn and he had gotten better. All because of Magnus really. He loved him, well they loved each other. So she often could see how the two very strong, very stubborn men would both learn to soften and admit guilt or confusion or even mistakes. All to get things to work out with each other.
At least he wasn't sitting up though, he stayed down this time. Of course that might also just show how bad it had been. Her lips pursed and she glanced behind her. Of course he had questions but there was really only so much she could tell him. There was only so much that she knew to be honest. "You've been out just over 13 hours. Right now everything is locked down. The Institute is on alert and a team was sent to try and take care of the damage at the hotel, but. . . " He had to know. Of course they would be investigated as well, of course the Clave would be asking questions and would be investigating them all.
He went straight for everyone else, of course. Worried about their mother. He had always had a better relationship with their mother than she had, even thought it had gotten better recently. "Mom is fine, don't worry. She, can't be helping right now though, you know that. With things in lock down, Magnus had to leave. He didn't argue, he just, wanted to make sure you were all right. I promised I'd let him know and I will. But Alec, " Her voice lowered, both to try and make this easier and to make sure they weren't exactly overheard. "Alec, Lilith is gone. I guess it worked, she attacked Simon and his mark, well it destroyed her. It, it destroyed the entire floor. By the time Jace got up there, everything was gone. Everyone."
She was worried about Jace, she had been worried since they had seen him under Lilith's spell and him begging to be killed. Now, having lost Clary she wasn't sure how she was going to help him. For now she couldn't even go after him. She had to make sure that Alec was all right first. She had to make sure that they all would be, and she had a plan for that. "Alec, you know they will figure out what happened. Simon could be in trouble. We can't let anyone know about his mark or being a Daylighter, and one more mistake and they will take the Institute away from you. So, if anyone asks, you didn't know until you showed up at the hotel. I used you to get to Alicante and get the cage to capture Jace, I wanted to save him instead of calling it in, so I didn't tell you. You just, found out and came to stop me and that's when you were hurt. All right?"

As far as Alec was concerned, thirteen hours was thirteen hours too long to have been unconscious. Not when things were as unstable as they had to be right now. So much could happen in the span of five minutes, let alone thirteen hours. If he hadn't just tried to get up only to fail moments ago, he'd have done it again. Instead he shifted until he thought better of it and settled back onto the mattress. Raziel, but he hated being an invalid. There was too much to do, too much that needed fixing and managing and there were very few people he trusted in the Institute to run things in his stead: one of them was trying to pacify him at this very moment.
It would figure, the moment he was incapable of running things... that everyone would seize on the opportunity to kick both his mother and his boyfriend out of the institute. It wasn't unexpected, or even the first time, but sometimes being a shadowhunter was just ... so exhausting. He knew that lockdown was a serious call but he couldn't help feeling that he shouldn't have to fight against everyone to have his family be there with them. But, in the end, that wasn't important. Not compared to the fact that everyone was all right and relatively unharmed, himself excluded.
So when Izzy emphasized that everyone was gone when Jace got to Lilith's place, it didn't register at first, why that was such a terrible thing. He'd blame the head injuries, if pressed. His brows pinched slightly in confusion. "What about Clary?" he asked at length. His eyes flitted around the infirmary as if expecting to see her.
And then..... and then Izzy said the most ridiculous thing he'd ever heard her say in his entire life. (And she'd once claimed she knew how to cook.) He'd have been more offended about the "one more mistake" comment, if she wasn't right. Not that he'd made many mistakes since becoming head, but he wasn't a child. He knew the Clave were only in support of him so long as he succeeded. Yes he'd been offered the position in Alicante, but Jace had gotten posessed on his watch. And he'd be damned if he let Izzy suffer for his mistakes.
"Absolutely not," he managed, with all the affront he could muster in his current state. He took a deep steadying breath that... had no right to hurt as much as it did. "You're not... this was my call, you're not taking the fall for this." words: ### || tagged || notes: abcAnnie || caution

- FIRE - "If I could light the world up, for just one day." It was honestly a miracle that he hadn't bolted right out of bed, yet again, once he knew how long he had been out. Or how their mother was not in the Institute. Or Magnus. Or, well, anything. It just went to show how close they had come to loosing him that he hadn't. It meant he couldn't. Of course, now they both knew it too. She was worried about it, but for now what could they do? Any more runes to speed up healing and he would probably get so over loaded he'd be off of runes for a week and that was just not a good idea.
There it was, the question she was dreading. She had hoped to side step it, but Alec was way too smart for that. She licked at her bottom lip and her eyes couldn't meet his, so drifted downward. "Clary, is gone Alec. There was no sign of her, or, her body." In that sentence, was the explanation for the other question probably plaguing him. Where was Jace? The truth was that although Jace wanted to be there, he was lost. Not just unable to be found. No, he was broken. Not as badly as she and Alec had seen him when they had tried to free him from Lilith, but still broken. She had to stay until Alec was awake, was sure to be okay. Then she would work on Jace. A sister's work was never done in this family.
With a sigh she pursed her lips and crossed her arms over her chest. If he wanted to pull that 'in charge' voice on her, she could be just as stubborn, thank you very much. "Look Alec, we are in some trouble here. I'm not exactly planning on martyring myself here. But they already know we stole the cage, and figured out it was for Jace. We are getting investigated and there's nothing we can do if you take the fall for it all and are booted out of the job of running this place. So as far as the stealing goes, it was all me. They will probably just demote me from weapons master. Big deal."
Of course, she was saying that but she really would be sad. She was proud of her achievements. She worked hard and often still was seen as just a Lightwood kid. Alec being the one with the brains and future. The stuff she did do was chalked up to her playing honey pot and nothing else. Constantly underestimated, and while she used that to work in her own favor, it still sucked that no one noticed just how capable she was. Getting Weapons Master had been like someone finally noticing her for her.
